The Consequences of Non-Payment

The Consequences of Non-Payment

4 September 2024

BHP, Chevron, Glencore, Inpex and Woodside failed to pay their social cost of carbon debts by the official due date of Tuesday 3rd September 2024. The Social Licence Watchdogs have therefore completed the routine procedure for companies who have lost their social standing.

BHP: failed to pay social cost of carbon debt of $194,005,229,000
Chevron: failed to pay social cost of carbon debt $428,156,488,375
Glencore: failed to pay social cost of carbon debt $241,406,706,750
Inpex: failed to pay social cost of carbon debt $180,144,927,050
Woodside: failed to pay social cost of carbon debt $370,941,263,255

Official result: the social licence to operate for each company has been symbolically shredded. Their debts are still outstanding.

The remains of all 5 social licences now reside in an urn created by Abdul-Rahman Abdullah. You can view this at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
