tts: recruit is an interactive dvd art work blurring the distinction between soldier, terrorist and civilian. tts: recruit places the viewer in the simulated role of a ‘recruit’ who must undertake training in terror. the work parallels recruitment methodologies from military and guerrilla forces, embracing pop-culture formats such as motivational videos, game-play & role-play scenarios, fitness workouts, aptitude tests and ‘consequence free’ target practise  tts: recruit is part of pvi collective’s body of work investigating fear & terror as a methodology for social control. tts: recruit is intended as a one-on-one interactive experience. terror training from the comfort of your lounge room…

ever wondered what it’s like in an army? have you seen the new tv recruiting ad campaign for the australian defence force? putting yourself in dangerous situations that only a well trained recruit would know how to cope with. of course there’s the u.s. army’s online game, ‘america’s army’, free to download. it’s the most authentic military experience available for wannabe fighters. your top score would of course be logged and flagged by the military and you may even be contacted by a recruiting officer, you game for that? the internets such a good resource, have you stumbled across an online rap video recruiting people to take up jihad? it’s quite a catchy tune actually. or maybe you’ve seen tv’s alias star jennifer garner, promoting recruitment into the cia. they need people with integrity, patriotism and courage. oddly enough so do al-qaeda…

times have certainly changed, haven’t they? the art of modern conflict has transformed too. theorists claim a fourth generation warfare has emerged revealing no boundaries between soldier and civilian, battlefield and cityscape. terrifying when you think about it. seems like we all need to undertake some training then… so who’s up for recruitment? have you got what it takes to be inducted? are you ready?
